Journal 16: April 20, 2000 through November 23, 2000. Random notes and sketches on first few pages. April 20, 2000. Frank, Ollie (Renita and John's dog) and I were driving to work this morning and noticed the newest safety additions on the road to Montauk: white, plastic posts 50' apart w/ reflective tape at the top in the grassy areas in the few remaining sections w/out guard rails. We laughed and tried to figure out when they'd been added and then imagined the future safety additions. On the next page I sketched in pencil the road with wooden walls at the edge and tree limbs hanging over and titled it "Road to Montauk 2010"

Sunday morning. Last day at Mom's. This has been an excellent visit. Many thoughts about moving here over the last couple of days. Floods of thoughts as I lay in bed thinking this morning. Now the move South makes much more sense. Because I really want to, instead of because I feel an obligation. It's a good time to make the change. Teaching or a job in Marine Science.

various notes afterwards including a recipe for Mom's Rum Cake:

1 cup chopped pecans or walnuts.
    1 - 18.5 oz yellow cake mix
1 - 3/75 oz instant vanilla pudding mix
    4 eggs
    1/2 cup cold H2O
    1/2 cup oil
    1/2 cup dark rum

    Glaze:
    2 Tbs butter
    1/4 cup H2O
    1/2 cup sugar
    1/4 cup rum.

    Prehead oven to 325 F.
    Grease adn flour bundt pan.
Sprinkle nuts over bottom of pan.
    Mix all cake ingredients.
Pour butter over nuts in pan.
Bake one hour. Set on rack to cool.
    Invert on serving plate.
Prick top. Drizzle and brush glaze evenly over top and sides.

For glaze, melt butter in saucepan. Stir in H2o and sugar. Boil 5 minutes, stirring constantly. Stir in rum.
